Here are some patterns I made for the M&A project, but i have started a pattern book so I can archive how they develop - At some point I would like to use them on ceramics/fabric/more engravings.

TESSELLATION WORKSHOP: Round 1, year 9, 210 students

On the 7th of October 2011 it was Ada Lovelace day at Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls.

ADA LOVELACE, the 'Enchantress of Numbers' worked with Charles Babbage, categorically speaking she was the first computer programmer ever and she was a woman.

This was the first a series of workshops I am co-running with community artist Darcey Williamson which aim to encourage creative practice and thought in schools, emphasising the use of maths and science in art, design and music and creative collaborative practice and thought in science. The workshops demonstrate the value of science, maths and creative thinking across disciplines and how they feed into each other in many vocations. The workshop took place in the school hall, with all 210 surprisingly responsive year 9 students. They interpreted the pattern making maths task really well and we were frankly amazed with the patterns produced by the students. And with their seeminly nonchalant genius. We talked about tessellation in nature, design, art, architecture and engineering pointing their attention to the fine work of Olafur Eliasson among others and to last (school) year's STEMNET project 'Dome Build' with 2010-2011's year 10s. We wanted to convince the students that maths and geometry were beautiful, communicative and fun. So the workshop incorporated a geometry lesson about WHY it is impossible to tessellate a regular pentagon (or any other regular polygon with any MORE THAN 6 sides), in a regular way, on a plane (on a 2D surface).

N/B: A regular tessellation is a tessellation made up of the same shape- like a bee hive is made of hexagons.

Here is a hint: A circle on a plane measures 360 degrees......Think of interior angles.

I have been commissioned to create a coat of arms, having been give full licence to do as I wish with this single specificity I have gone a little nuts with it. I will continue to do so. The 12th of July was Buckminsterfuller's birthday!

This summer (July 14th to be precise) as part of the STEMNET volunteer program I helped to build a geodesic dome. With 10 students from Elen Wilkinson School for Girls (located in North Ealing), artist and friend Darcey Williamson, the guidance of Mr Hayes (their Chemistry teacher and Science co-ordinator), Miss Idros (maths teacher) and her husband (who kindly took a day off work) we embarked on the building endeavour- which took 4 days. The girls also got a fabulous talk from Sumita Sinha (Course leader, MA Architecture of Rapid Change and Scarce Resources London Metropolitan University) who brought to light the importance of both male AND female perspectives in architecture, how women (a rare thing is a female architect) have access to perspective a male may not have in mind (and vice versa) but she highlighted that there is a lack of women in the field among other very interesting ideas and truths about WOMEN IN ARCHITECTURE.

Using marshmallows and toothpicks for a demo to test the structural integrity of squares VS that of triangles, we quickly established and verified that indeed- TRIANGLES are 'better than squares at holding things up'. Your intuitions may have been quite accurate in supposing that 'sides facing in' from a base and that meet near or at each others tops provide reliable support.

Discussing the purpose of maths in design, technology, engineering, architecture and the arts, brought us to BUCKMINSTERFULLER amongst others and helped in avoiding the many a snooze situation we feared. Indeed mathematics is a surprisingly far reaching discipline and while a 15 year old human may protest 'whats the point?' it becomes painstakingly obvious that its useful. FACT. It is almost well nigh impossible to prevent a 15 year old in gravitating towards thinking of this kind- 'whats the point' is an utterance to be expected from a 15 year old but really its just another way of saying 'WHY?' (unless what is meant by 'whats the point' has some kind of symbolic rhetorical meaning- which is possible). I digress. More to the point (FACT!) if you want to build things for your self, if you want to do something in or to your environment, if you want to DESIGN if you want to MAKE you need to know something about the material nature of reality; the height of your wall for instance and the fact that triangles are strong structures (albeit that many good shelves can be made without triangulation however few durable structures are made with out measurement and accuracy.)

We wanted to emphasise the significance of contributing to your environment. Contribution, collaboration and importantly the absolute necessity for creativity in engineering- "where and how can I apply 'this' principle to a problem that effects a lot of people?" 'This' i.e. BUCKMINSTERFULLER'S geodesic Domes. Of course there are troves of applications and the interdependency of creativity, design, maths and engineering is undeniable.

IN GENERAL: Modis et Amminiculum is a project on the relationship between form and function in design, language and nature. "The connection between form and function has been an organising principle in the sciences, arts and humanities which has emerged with increasing force since the 18th century and appears to preoccupy what I am trying to develop in this chapter."

"The most important thing in comparative anatomy is the relationship between form and function. The broader application of which enables us to develop hypotheses tracing the evolution of organisms and organs and simultaneously allows us to see our selves in a broader biological context. Functional anatomy examines the performance of structures within organisms the performance of structures within organisms, such as cells, tissues, organs, organ systems and other complex functional units." Functional Anatomy of the Vertebrates- 3rd Edition; Liem, Bemis, Walker, Grande (Brooks/Cole 2001)

Lest not forget the property of nature ‘ordinary exhibits extraordinary behaviour’ (Davis, 2009, 24), which is best understood in biological terms in the opening paragraphs of Francis Crick’s Astonishing Hypothesis (Crick, 1993, 3):

Albeit that Crick had some ideas that were just wrong, this particular statement is quite true. Anatomy is incredible, even if it is meat. The fact that a meaty, fleshy substance gives rise to digestion, articulation and thought IS astonishing. No magic, special ingredient needs to be added to the bio-mechanical marvels that we catergorise as living, just "ordinary matter exhibiting extraordinary behaviour". I think it worth mentioning that although James Watson and Francis Crick are credited for the discovery the structure of DNA British biophysicist and X-ray crystallographer Rosalind Elsie Franklin, made invaluable contributions to the discovery. At the time, this went largely unnoticed. Probably because she was a woman.

Since January 2011, I have been drawing in Dissecting Room (DR) at St George's University (Hospital in Tooting...). The bodies I have drawn were donated for anatomical examination under the Human Tissue Act (2004) and consent for images to be taken was given. Such a rare opportunity, not only for myself but especially for medical students is a great privilege. The utmost care and respect is given at all times in the DR, and all who attend and teach at Saint Georges are sincerely grateful for the generosity of donors and their families.

This experience, including what the students and faculty have taught me has encouraged me to take a closer look at anatomy and in brief- consider what concerns form and function. with considering to what is lost and what is gained from different forms of representation: What anatomical commonalities are represented and HOW do schematised illustrations and/or abstract symbols correlate with descriptions of a physical principle. The logical properties of such representations reflect distinct relationships in anatomy, thusly accounting for discrepancies and succeeding in clearly describing nature. On the other hand it is also relevant to consider that the impression made on our senses when observing nature directly. There is a physical sense associated with this concept, reminiscent of Descartes. When one draws from you life, one draws 'how things are' (although via the subjectivity of penmanship).
These different forms of representation, vary in their verisimilitude but both succeed in describing aspects of anatomy. A lot can be gained from simple observation however Descartes error is clearly defined when we deduce that observation alone is not enough to guarantee understanding.....something along the lines of DAVID HUME'S admission that inference does not lead infallibly to truth. One can not rely on re-occurrence of a particular process or structure in nature (take the rising of the sun for example) to guarantee that this event will keep happening forever (knowing involves definitions- 'what is happening? and how?'). We need to know what the pattern is and how it works if we want to make the kind of statement; 'the sun will rise every day until I die'. (This is only really true for a limited about of lifetimes anyway- so imagine just one lifetime for the example to be true so we can simplify the point). Such a statement is only reliable if the process behind it is understood and the 'form' (i.e the theory- which in this example are the laws of planetary motion, the Newtonian approximation-special relativity and Einstein's theory of general relativity) is repeatedly matched to observation (matched to a pattern- maths or an image). Only then can you say- this effect 'the sun will rise every day until I die', can be shown to be a real thing- A correlation beween experience and concept.

Concerning Hume's admission "inference does not lead infallibly to truth", the publication containing the research of this endeavour considers a variety of illustrated facsimiles of works from the likes of Paul Churchland and Paul Feyerabend which highlight how the physical nature of the mind; sensory perception and 'psychological experiences' provide unreliable evidence. And although beliefs/culture and convincing sensory and emotional inputs may protest to this adversity; protest that 'this is what I feel', 'but, this is what I saw, I definitely saw this....'- How do you KNOW? We might question adversely. How do you know what you saw? How do you know that what you saw was what you saw? Again, Betrand Russell ties this up nicely- "If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way".

Illustration done way back when, in the dusty past of 2010. Twas for The Solar Hills' project proposal created by artist Liliane Lijn and astrophysicist John Vellerga :

Solar Hills are large-scale solar installations in the landscape that define the horizon with light. With Solar Hills, we are creating a new awareness of the beauty and poetry of our star.

The coloured points atop t'mountain 'represent' spectroheliostats. These contain prisms calibrated to refract sun light at different positions across the landscape or the Mont Sainte Victoire skyline. The colours change as the relative positions of these prisms move with respect to an observer. Ahh the illusive nature of light!

Their is heaving pile of un-done dones. One project, which began in Janurary (and although it was supposed to be done in March, it will take a long long time to deal with) is about anatomy. Its the first in a series of projects intent on encouraging people to dedicate a proportion of their attention to science.

The second is a book about asteroids. Although its not really ABOUT asteroids it merely relates to them in an irrelevant and ridiculous (possible un-necessary) way. Its a nice break- Im getting a lot out of doing something for no reason.

OLIVER BYRNE: The Elements of Euclid

I purchased a wonderful book published by TASCHEN called THE ELEMENTS OF EUCLID, by OLIVER BYRNE. Its an extremely well presented facsimile of the 1847 publication which was -as Werner Oechclin points out in the remarkable essay accompanying the book, accepted as a curiosity in the 19th century and (undeservedly) treated likewise. It is fabulously clear, Euclidian geometry being consigned to a plane, is a type of geometry you will be familiar with (or would have been at some point- possibly in school). Bertrand Russell, in his elaborate and attentive skepticism, kindly informs us that Euclid is not the master of logic (of course he proposes a proof to support this allegation) and in fact even in the time of Byrne, euclidian ideology was 'demoded'. I love Bertrand Russell and indeed, it is dangerous to place the minds of ancient philosophers on a type of pedestal. Considering non-euclidian geometry, topology, abstract mathematics, how these are used in contemporary sciences, our 21st century world and view of OUTER SPACE, it does not always make sense to do so. However, in agreement with Oechclin, it is in fact a useful thing that 'Euclid' compiled these geometric proofs (even if they may be some what skewed in their clarity in comparison to our definitions of 'proof') so that they were tidily and conveniently stacked and bound in one object for people to read. 'Euclid', who like Homer, may have been a number of contributors.

Better still (I think) is that Oliver Byrne went out of his way to visualy represent these proofs in a marvelously clear and visual way. Aesthetically, it appears quite beyond the scope of his century and exists as a prolific and effective approach to explanation. The intention being to assist learning, the book dis-ambiguates the abstract language of mathematics, rendering these observations of geometry more readily and visually tangible, translating geometric and arithmetic languages which you can SEE! As in see 'happening'- while you read. In terms of the presentation of formal logic, how (if it is even possible?) could this visual language be used in literary arguments and proofs? Similarly, how indeed can it relate to semiotics and logic? And in how many ways! Some reading must be done. Here are some images from the TASCHEN website.

The un-rewards of animating are intriguing. One can spend countless hours on a project to receive very little in return until the date of its completion, which in my case is hard to determine. Progress is slow. Granted that I am dribbling through this repetitious and exacting task, the obsessive behaviorisms involved in this production, are in no way dampened. Quite the contrary.

I will warn you now, that it does NOT only take a minute girl! It takes about 7 months for a mere minute and surprisingly this disproportionate time expense remains one which can provide great satisfaction. To be continued....

THE SPACE SUIT AND THE TOILET (mild appreciation of)

I will be brave (or ignorant) enough to assume the following: People think about space suits.

I am not keen on assumptions, but being idealistic and a human that often thinks about space, I LIKE (enjoy or take pleasure in) assuming that most people develop or at least consider developing an intrigue in the unknown. I hope that this statement is not too ambitious or too idealistic. Amongst the many things being unknown to our kind, SPACE is one of them. I am quite sure that many people think about space - as in the space what is intergalactic etc.

I would like to assume, for now, that perhaps people also contemplate space suits. Ill even be so bold as saying that people consider the practical feasibility of 'dressing-up' as in 'fancy dressing-up', as an astronaut.

Following a discussion about space suits with a friend of mine, I decided it was worth more consideration. It is not just a costume, although a mighty costume it be. With barely over half a century of scientific prelude and development, on July 20 in the year 1969 AD, NASA's Apollo 11 became the first manned mission to land on to the surface of our Moon.

About being naked in Space:

One does not explode,
One's blood does not boil- the containing effect of your skin and circulatory system keep your tissues together,
Nor does one instantly freeze, even though Space is typically very cold, less than 3 degrees above absolout zero (+/-3K on the Kelvin scale or −270.15°C ).
One will however quickly become unconscious after the body's dangerously depleted oxygen supply in the blood reaches the brain and unprotected skin is likely to suffer burns once exposed to the intense ultraviolet radiation of direct sunlight. Humans are not inhabitants of the vacuum, outer space is most inhospitable. You would die quickly, and funnily enough holding your breath before entering a vacuum will do you great damage (think pressure difference).

Barely over half a century of relevant technology and research lead to its production. How fawn-like it will look to the future! Compare this to how long it took for people to accept that the world was round. It took far too long! This does not inspire me with confidence, although in reality, largely to blame in this retardation of understanding are those who obliged people to follow and not question moral/educational authority.

If it were flat, then all the shadows on the whole surface of the entire world would always be the same length at the same times throughout the year. And such is NOT the case (Carl Sagan illustrates this beautifully in one of the episodes of the COSMOS tv series first broadcasted in 1980). Humans have been writing and traveling for thousands of years, many thousands enough to have shared and compared calendars and have initiative to inscribe observations of the natural world and compare these also. Seeing as it IS observable in many ways, I'm sure more people KNEW the earth was round, but were not allowed to talk about that. That is a terrible thought.

What else is amazing? SEWAGE! Here is another assumption: Which assumes (stupidly and ignorantly perhaps, I do know any facts) that the vast majority of people living in large cities across the world have seen, or at least heard of a toilet. Baring in mind that there are, both in existence and in use a vast variety of effective toilet and irrigation designs.

Where ever it was, who ever, which ever organisation or collective and when ever they lived who were among the first toilet/sewage designers and builders, well done! Very handy development. More sewage systems please! Unfortunately I can not digress into environmental issues, another time maybe, when I know more and feel like vomiting again, this here merely be 'bigging up' the concept of water sanitation, it is wonderful. May sewage systems become more efficient and safe for all!

The Taylor Glacier, Blood Falls and Europa

Antarctica's "Blood Falls", was initially thought to be red algae. But its spewing red because of ferrous ions in water coming into contact with oxygen. Ions of iron, were originally dissolved in what became an isolated pouch of ancient seawater (the former Antarctic Ocean) which was trapped below the Taylor Glacier during the Miocene period about about 23.03 to 5.332 million years ago- a time not-as-long-as-it-seems-ago in terms of geology; flowering plants were around accompanying the long-beaked dolphin Pomatodelphis and our modern shark.

This isolated water pouch, which is the source of blood falls, contains a very high concentration of salts (brines) and is described as a hyper-saline solution. It is; oxygen free- due to physical and chemical mechanisms at work progressing from this isolation, rich in chlorides, rich in sulfates- association with marine conditions and rich in ferrous ions- signaling microbial activity in the water and sub-glacial bedrock and its extremely dark and cold. This sub-glacial ecosystem is a very unlikely place to find life considering these harsh conditions, Extremophiles are organisms adapted to such extreme conditions. This makes it an interesting place to study when pondering over evolution and genetics and even speculating where else in the universe life could be found. Like Europa for example; Europa is one of Jupiter's moons, primarily made of silicate rock with a likely iron core. Europa has a feeble atmosphere containing a significant percentage of oxygen, and a thick crust of ice- suggestive of extreme types of 'sub-glacial' water pouches, oceans even. But it has yet to be proved/disproved if there in exists any bacterial life- or life of any description at all. Its very unlikely.

Possibly something worth engineering? Perhaps not? Who knows?

ANYWAY, when these soluble ferrous ions come into contact with atmospheric oxygen they are oxidized (surprisingly) and iron oxide has this rusty pigment you will probably recognize.

Opus: Reseach for a 'MAKE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE' book

Here beginuth my research for on going project. Im starting work on a 'Make your own Adventure' type book. Something like an untold story and game combined.

ENIGMA, an encryption device built by the Nazis during WW2 to send secret messages to each other functioned by means of a series or rotors which shuffle up the alphabet 'at random'. A=L, B=W for example to encrypt a message in what is reffered to as a polyalphabetic substitution cipher. What made Enigma powerful was that its electromechanical innards contained a gearing system that would re-shuffle the order after every letter typed - one or more rotors would step before the electrical connections were made, so that each letter of every word of a message was encrypted- the letters were re-scrambling if you like. This would be de-coded on the receiving by means of calculations by another machine on the same setting- obeying the same mathematical rule.
Of course, seeing as it is a machine, it is NOT a producer of infinitely random disarrangments. There were a finite number of scramblings it could perform, thus it is determinable, decipherable and was defeated by the Codebreaking team of the Allied forces in Bletchley Park UK.

The successor of The Wehrmacht Enigma variant, was the LORENZ cipher, which had 12 rotors rather than Enigma's 3. It was of course, also finite in its ability to shuffle and its psyedorandom powers were, of course, crackable. The Lorenz was vanquished by the Allies as a result of the creation of the very first programmable, digital, electronic, computing device - COLLOSUS! Colossus was designed by engineer Tommy Flowers of the Post Office Research Station at Dollis Hill and a collective of rather wonderful people from Bletchly Park. Clever Tommy Flowers and clever Alan Turing, also of Bletchly Park who made the TURING MACHINE ( I will look at this later).

Its a very interesting slither of history which I recommend EVERYONE to read about. But moving on...

A page from sketch book I was asked to upload. While waiting at Glastonbury's 'blue gate' for 7 hours, I played a game with Glastlan work partner Isabel White. The objective of the game, which I first played in Norway is to turn your opponents dirty picture clean by means of your so-called 'penmanship'. The player who turns the most dirty pictures the most clean, is the weinner.

This was an illustrative response to Dracula, a fiction novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. I found all the main characters very irritating and was looking forward to an outrageous unprecedented end but such was not the case. None the less as a whole, the story was rather good to read and I'm sure that I was (regardless of my annoyance with the characters) quite interested at the time. I never had a camera good enough to photograph this but now I do. Perhaps the origin of these re-occurring stabby arms and an odd attempt to use fake cultural references. Can't say I'm crazy about the thing but I did enjoy using loads of paint.
