Mont Sainte Victoire Diagram (Liliane Lijn)

Illustration done way back when, in the dusty past of 2010. Twas for The Solar Hills' project proposal created by artist Liliane Lijn and astrophysicist John Vellerga :

Solar Hills are large-scale solar installations in the landscape that define the horizon with light. With Solar Hills, we are creating a new awareness of the beauty and poetry of our star.

The coloured points atop t'mountain 'represent' spectroheliostats. These contain prisms calibrated to refract sun light at different positions across the landscape or the Mont Sainte Victoire skyline. The colours change as the relative positions of these prisms move with respect to an observer. Ahh the illusive nature of light!

EGAKU!

DRAW FOR JAPAN! Chie Miyazaki is helping to organise a fund raising art fair at Jaguar Shoes called EGAKU, on TODAY. Works have been donated by many a wizard, many a doozy whale.

Natalie Kay-Thatcher and myself have donated some work. Additionally, 'Rob Ryan, Nobrow, Okido, Anorak Magazine, Jean Jullien, Laura Carlin, Frinton Press, Peepshow, Hato Press, Lazy Oaf, Winged Chariot & many many more'. Wilikers!

What else are you going to find on an asteroid?

Their is heaving pile of un-done dones. One project, which began in Janurary (and although it was supposed to be done in March, it will take a long long time to deal with) is about anatomy. Its the first in a series of projects intent on encouraging people to dedicate a proportion of their attention to science.

The second is a book about asteroids. Although its not really ABOUT asteroids it merely relates to them in an irrelevant and ridiculous (possible un-necessary) way. Its a nice break- Im getting a lot out of doing something for no reason.

Flatland (the 1885 tale of) by Edwin Abbott Abbott; interesting satyr of Victorian society and fascinating treatment of geometry in fiction is a trove of many things symbolic, representative, wrong and true. OLIVER BYRNE: The Elements of Euclid

I purchased a wonderful book published by TASCHEN called THE ELEMENTS OF EUCLID, by OLIVER BYRNE. Its an extremely well presented facsimile of the 1847 publication which was -as Werner Oechclin points out in the remarkable essay accompanying the book, accepted as a curiosity in the 19th century and (undeservedly) treated likewise. It is fabulously clear, Euclidian geometry being consigned to a plane, is a type of geometry you will be familiar with (or would have been at some point- possibly in school). Bertrand Russell, in his elaborate and attentive skepticism, kindly informs us that Euclid is not the master of logic (of course he proposes a proof to support this allegation) and in fact even in the time of Byrne, euclidian ideology was 'demoded'. I love Bertrand Russell and indeed, it is dangerous to place the minds of ancient philosophers on a type of pedestal. Considering non-euclidian geometry, topology, abstract mathematics, how these are used in contemporary sciences, our 21st century world and view of OUTER SPACE, it does not always make sense to do so. However, in agreement with Oechclin, it is in fact a useful thing that 'Euclid' compiled these geometric proofs (even if they may be some what skewed in their clarity in comparison to our definitions of 'proof') so that they were tidily and conveniently stacked and bound in one object for people to read. 'Euclid', who like Homer, may have been a number of contributors.

Better still (I think) is that Oliver Byrne went out of his way to visualy represent these proofs in a marvelously clear and visual way. Aesthetically, it appears quite beyond the scope of his century and exists as a prolific and effective approach to explanation. The intention being to assist learning, the book dis-ambiguates the abstract language of mathematics, rendering these observations of geometry more readily and visually tangible, translating geometric and arithmetic languages which you can SEE! As in see 'happening'- while you read. In terms of the presentation of formal logic, how (if it is even possible?) could this visual language be used in literary arguments and proofs? Similarly, how indeed can it relate to semiotics and logic? And in how many ways! Some reading must be done. Here are some images from the TASCHEN website.

IT DOES NOT ONLY TAKE A MINUTE!

The un-rewards of animating are intriguing. One can spend countless hours on a project to receive very little in return until the date of its completion, which in my case is hard to determine. Progress is slow. Granted that I am dribbling through this repetitious and exacting task, the obsessive behaviorisms involved in this production, are in no way dampened. Quite the contrary.

I will warn you now, that it does NOT only take a minute girl! It takes about 7 months for a mere minute and surprisingly this disproportionate time expense remains one which can provide great satisfaction. To be continued....

Kant pointed out in the middle of last century, what had not previously been discovered by mathematicians or physical astronomers, that the frictional resistance against tidal currents on the earth's surface must cause a diminution of the earth's rotational speed. This immense discovery in Natural Philosophy seems to have attracted little attention,--indeed to have passed quite unnoticed, --among mathematicians, and astronomers, and naturalists, until about 1840, when the doctrine of energy began to be taken to heart.
